Table Talk – Longing for Home
It is that time of year again. Christmas is right around the corner. It is fascinating to me at how differently people react to the holidays. For some it is the absolute best time of the year, filled with good memories and the hopes of making new ones. For others, it is a dreaded and depressing time of year, filled with stress and anxiety. Whether we carry good or bad memories from our home of origin, we all long for home during Christmas. The Bible teaches us not to get too comfortable in our home called, Earth. We are just strangers in this place on our way to an eternal home. The Bible refers to us as strangers and aliens. Today, Lancaster County is becoming the new home for people all around the world seeking safety and security.
Our church is about to begin the journey of sponsoring a second refugee family. Can you imagine the desperation that leads people to leave their homes and families to travel to a distant land, with a strange culture and unfamiliar language in hopes that they will find a new home and a new future? How do you think the Christian’s identity as an ‘alien’ and ‘stranger’ should affect his or her attitude toward immigrants today?
