Why the Table?

The name “The Table” was chosen strategically.  We wanted to find an image that would describe the essence of our church.  We wanted it to communicate warmth, hospitality and community.  We believe a table is a place where these things come together. So many good things happen around the table.

When I was a youth pastor, we had a very large kitchen.  I never knew when we were going to have extra guests at our table.  Friends of my children or a youth group kid that just stopped by or a family from the church or a carload of relatives driving through the county might surprise us for dinner.   Nothing was more fun than pulling out all the leaves that went to the table and putting them in place. When you want to include everyone, you often need to add a plank!  When the table was extended we knew we were in for a good time.  The food would be great.  The house would be filled with laughter and conversation.  The stories would entertain us for hours.

It is this feeling that we are trying to capture at the Table Church…a feeling of family and community. A table is a place where we come both to be fed and to serve … a place give and receive hospitality.  A family gathers around the table for nourishment, fellowship and identity.

The table is a place where we welcome our guests and treat them as family.  In a world of increasing alienation and disconnectedness, people long for a place to be at home.  The Table is a place where folks can authentically connect with God and other people... a place where we meet to share our story and find refuge from the daily grind.  Won’t you be our guest soon?
